Research withImpactLeadershipIntegrity
Now that we face some of the most complex challenges in the history of humanity, the study of interrelationships between life and matter, from multiple perspectives and at all scales, is a crucial task. At the Institute of Ecology, studies of sustainability, evolution, genetics and ecosystems are combined in multi- and transdisciplinary projects that address the most relevant problems of today.

2024 CALENDAR
Science Dissemination through Art
The goal of our 2024 calendar is to disseminate part of our scientific activity in an artistic way. Nine digital illustration artists participated in its creation.

Peyotes are beautiful cacti, emblematic for their medicinal and magical-religious use. It is an endemic species of Mexico. They inhabit the Chihuahuan desert, and their trade and cultivation are prohibited because they are legally classified as a psychotropic drug. The consequence of this is the illegal looting and collecting of peyotes from their habitat, decreasing their populations by up to 50% and putting this species at risk of extinction. The Genetics and Ecology Laboratory studies the dynamics and interactions of cactus populations.

People Make the Institute
We believe each person in our institute's community plays an important role in the success of our research and academic activities, and we truly value their contributions. That is why we seek to foster a cordial environment and encourage a constant collaboration between the people who constitute this community: permanent, administrative staff, researchers and students.
The institute's policy is zero tolerance for any manifestation of unethical, violent or discriminatory conduct, and we have the appropriate channels for its attention, timely conduct and fair resolution in the pertinent university bodies.
The Institute's History
Since the Institute of Ecology is a relatively young academic entity—officially founded in 1996—, many of its founding members are still active and share our spaces for collaboration and academic development with the rest of the institute's academic community on a daily basis. Thanks to this, we remain closely connected to our fundation history and become more aware of the transformations that the institute has since witnessed.
